How to be Safe from Toxic Clothing and Bedding

  • by

Detoxing your body means detoxing your sheets and clothing.

If you start reading about the chemicals in your clothing, its pretty scary and depressing! Most cotton today is genetically modified and that is synonymous with being heavily sprayed with Monsanto’s deadly Round-up pesticide, and many others! Then there are chemical dyes and washes which help clothes to be wrinkle-free, stain resistant, shiny, etc. whose chemicals range from formaldehyde to nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) which cause hormone disruption.  Not only do these chemicals get into your bloodstream by contact with the skin, but they are polluting rivers and water supplies around the world from washing these clothes.

Permanent Press is often treated with formaldehyde.

Rayon is treated with sulfuric acid, an organ toxicant.

Stain resistant fabrics are treated with PFC’s which cause hormone disruption.

Heavy metals such as the carcinogens chrome, copper, and zinc are often used in conventional fabric dyes.

Many fabrics are made from toxic petrochemicals.

Dry Cleaning chemicals are very toxic, and even supposed “organic” dry cleaning is still full of toxic chemicals and its hard to know what they are using. There is serious greenwashing going on there in the dry cleaning world.  Find out exactly what chemicals your dry cleaner uses and decide if you want to wear that.  I just hand wash my dry cleaning and hope for the best.

The list goes on and who knows what chemicals they are using processioning cloth in China!

HERE ARE  A FEW SUGGESTIONS:

  1. Love your old clothes! Washing slowly rids your clothes of these toxins!
  2. Always wash new clothes at least once to get rid of toxins.
  3. Buy Organic clothes for around the house or going out. Whole Food sells some nice organic T-shirts and workout pants.
  4. Buy Organic Clothes.  I think ‘Free People ‘ is sort of eco.
  5. Wear organic socks, bra, sleepwear and underwear, because they are closest to your body.
  6. Get Organic sheets, you are wearing sheets for hours every night! (I use these organic sheets.)   Target sells organic sheets, but frankly I don’t trust them!  The organic certification process is not very good outside of the country and you need to trust your brand.
  7. Smell  clothing before you buy, and if they smell like chemicals, don’t buy them!
  8. Wash all of your clothes in non toxic detergent or baking soda and white vinegar.
  9. Of course, KEEP detoxing to get chemicals out of your body and we can’t avoid them all together!
