Detox Methods for MCS

There are so many ways to Detox the Body.

Detoxing is more than doing a cleanse or buying a product, it is an ongoing lifestyle. Educating yourself about ways to avoid toxins, actual detoxing and ways to boost your whole body’s and health in order to process toxins more efficiently is the real detox,

In order to get well from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, it was a part-time job.

Below are some very effective methods that I used. Check out my blog posts and hundreds of photo posters to learn even more.

If you are not ill, you can just do the detoxing methods that best suit you.

The Basic Detox Protocol that I used to get well is from Sherry Rogers Book “Detoxify or Die” (in my ‘Shop’) , I add to this some kind of Mind./Body healing. (yoga, therapy, breathing, relaxing etc)

1. Get Toxins Out of your home and especially bedroom

2.Coffee Enema

3. Sauna

4.”Detox Cocktail” of Vitamin C 2000, alpha lipoic acid 300, glutithione 300  twice per day!}

Sauna stimulates the lymphatic system and mobilize toxins which are trapped in fat. Far Infrared Sauna is very popular for detoxing, I used the sauna at the gym is good and if you don’t have that, then any sweating is good!
You can start off with 10 minutes and work up to three 10-20 minute sessions. When I was really sick I was doing it 3 times a week. Toxins are stored in fat cells and its one of the only ways to get the toxins out. Far Infared Sauna is supposed to be better, but I couldn’t afford it. It was relaxing and I took essential oils and put them on wet cloth over my mouth for aroma therapy. I used lots of Eucalyptus and Rosemary which seemed healing to the lung.  Lots of gyms have saunas. Make sure there is no plastic in the sauna to heat up and release toxins. I have actually pried plastic notices off of the sauma walls, noone seemed to notice. You feel and look great after a sauna. Be sure to drink LOTS of water and replace lost minerals. There are ways to make your own sauna cheaply r buy lamps to place in the bathroom.  There are other ways to sweat and heat up the body, I am looking into this now.

This is a good article on the benefits and dangers of Far Infrared sauna for weight loss. The information is good for any kind of sauna.  http://www.buzzle.com/articles/infrared-sauna-for-weight-loss.html  the other two are good as well.

http://www.herbs2000.com/h_menu/det_sauna.htm is a great detox method.

Coffee Enema
It sounds awful and is daunting the first time, but the Coffee Enema is a serious healing force. You can use it any time you are feeling ill. It does so many like stimulate glutithione production, detox the liver, flushes out yeasts and toxins before they have a chance to reabsorb (important when doing chlorella, cilantro or any detox herb),kills parasites, flattens your abdomen and more… This article isn’t law, just one i found, if you Google, there are variations and lots of history.. Just use organic coffee, clean H20 and nontoxic cookware (Glass, ceramic or stainless steel)…Coffee Enema  is widely used in healing cancer. I think this is indispensable if you are very ill with MCS.  These are two videos I made on the subject

Dry Skin Brushing
This is supposed to be good for detoxing and can be used in combination with the shower. I wouldn’t do it after going out in the sun, because there is a new study out that says that Vitamin D is produced on your skin and takes up to 72 hours and is washed off (with soap) before the D is produced.

Activated Charcoal
is a great supplement that mops up toxins from the blood. I ate some very bad seafood once and didn’t get well until I went out and bought some. I don’t take it all the time. That’s just my feeling, but i do take it now and then, especially if I have been exposed to toxins.

Exercise and plenty of pure water! These are essential for good health!  Walk, ride a bike, do yoga. I can only recommend limited cardio in a gym. Gyms generally have little oxygen and are wiped and cleaned all day long with toxic chemicals. you don’t want to do cardio in that!

Gut Health The most abundant source of toxins are found in the intestines. Healing the gut is a major key to healing and well being. Coffee enema is a liver stimulator but also cleans the lower colon. there digestive enzyme supplemets, aloe vera, colodial silver, chlorella and many things beneficial to the gut. If you have MCS or a chronic illness, you can assume that you have gut health problems, even if you can feel them.

Colonic colonic costs about $75-100 but cleans toxins out of the colon. Supposed to work wonders, You can also do this at home with a colema board (I never tried). Colonics are great if you can afford it. I had 2 and didint notice a huge difference between that and doing an hours worth of enemas. They want you do go every week for 10 times or more often. I just didn’t have that as a priority for my money.

Colon Cleanse with Psyllium Husk and Bentonite I Did this for a while. I should do a more thorough cleanse one of these days. This is suposed to really clean your intestines. You do 1 teapoon of the Psyllium and 1 tablesppon of the bentonite in a glass of water with juice or whatever. Start with one or two glasses a day. Always drink a second glass of water and make sure you are drinking plenty during this process. I have never done it for weeks like some people do. It is supposed to work progressively and get lots of gunk from the walls of your intestines.

P & B are cheap at Vitacost.com or my Amazon Store http://astore.amazon.com/multi0d8-20/detail/B000HZK1DE; or you can  you can buy at Whole Foods or other Vitamin stores.

Oil Pulling
Or “Swishing” is a simple  Ayurveda detox method that seems to really work, especially for the mouth and lungs in my experience. I have blog post and video on the subject. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_7Bc-POQH0

Acupuncture I started getting acupuncture when I was all ready on the mend. The first time I went I brought my mask because clinic and hospital floor cleaner was still something I could not tolerate. I wore it the first time to lay in that toxic air for one hour and never thought to use it again. The floor cleaner never bothered me again and that was a year or so ago. I really believe in Acupuncture and have heard from many people who have been greatly helped by it.

Houseplants are beneficial to remove toxins from the air and add oxygen. The best are philodendrons, spider plants, aloe Vera etc. Google NASA study on air cleaning plants. If you are worried about mold spray some Hydrogen Peroxide on the dirt once a week.

Masks Don’t breath in toxins. The “I Can Breathe” are the best. Good for places you cant avoid chemical exposure. Each time you are exposed to chemicals you are damaging your organs, so sometimes its worth it to look funny if you are sensitive to chemicals. http://astore.amazon.com/multi0d8-20/detail/B0016IM7KQ

REMOVE TOXIC CHEMICALS FROM YOUR LIFE:
You must get them out of your home and your food and water, This is an impossible task, but do what you can. read Sherry Rogers and others and keep cleaning up your environment. There are so many things which may be the cause or contributor to MCS.

*Make the bedroom where you sleep safe. get rid of as many things as you can, Don’t keep plastics, books, magazines, computer, shoes or clothes in there. Paint your walls with NON-Toxic paint which is better than No VOC Paint. Get rid of carpet. Look into your heating and cooling systems and make them the less toxic possible.

*Change to all nontoxic cleaning supplies. 7th generation is good. you can do a lot washing with white vinegar and baking soda. You can add borax and essential oils too. I get all of my soap, shampoo online, Pretty much anything at Whole Foods or Trader Joes is good.

* Use Non-toxic personal care supplies. Cosmetics and personal care products are not regulated by the FDA. These items contain known toxins and carcinogens in their products. What you put on your skin or what you breathe into your lungs goes into your blood and body. so many new medicines are skin patches. Skin Deep has a database with cosmetic info. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/. I just use coconut oil for the skin and peppermint oil, unprocessed sea salt or aluminum free baking powder to brush my teeth. I am very anti-plastic from a health and environmental stance; but you can get everything pre-packaged. HOWEVER, do your homework because even products bought at Whole Foods or that say “organics” natural etc, can be toxic. The big companies bought the organic brand companies for the most part. I have many products listed in my Amazon Store  http://astore.amazon.com/multi0d8-20, but you can find these products many places.

*Nontoxic Sunscreen Badger and Soleo brand. Just becuase Organic is in the name of a product doesnt mean anything!

*Avoid Plastic: Avoid foods packages or served in plastic, the chemicals leach into the food, Never Microwave or eat anything in heated plastic or Styrofoam. I believe that getting these toxins from your food, skin and air are a menace to health. For more info see my blog post http://detoxthebody.blogspot.com/2011/11/detoxing-plastics-from-your-body-and.html

*Cookware Thow away your Teflon today, Its very toxic. Use stainless steel, glass, ceramic or cast iron cookware. I threw away all plastic utensils and food storage and use glass and ceramic.

* Clothing all wrinkle free fabrics contain formaldehyde. It would be wise to use organic fabrics. Some new Lines in department stores (Free People, I believe) are using less chemicals in clothing. Wash new clothes at least once before wearing. Some people with severe MCS need to wash their clothes several times before they can tolerate wearing it.

Any scented Air Freshener, soap etc In restaurants and public places I usually just throw them in the trash. Especially, the super toxic kind. Get away from these things as much as you can. MCS is not like an allergy and anytime you are feeling ill from chemicals you are damaging your body; so try not to ‘just take it’.

Natural Gas can cause or irritate MCS. One day I will get an electric stove. If you live over a restaurant or source of lots of gas, consider relocation.

Chlorine filters are essential for your shower, make sure to change the filter regularly.

 Toxic Beauty treatments:

Aesthetic products are an increasing cause of toxicity. All are advertised as safe, but you will find the doctors, tattoo artists and nail spas don’t have the information about what is in their products.

* Acrylic Nails. They are very toxic. I am not sure it wasn’t a major contributing factor in my illness. I don’t think any false nails or nail glue is good, But acrylic nails are extremely toxic.

*Nail Polish. Use non-toxic (or at least, OPI nail polish-which is toxic but not as bad as the rest which have Toluene and Formaldehyde).
*Tattoos: There is toxic and nontoxic tattoo ink. Some has mercury. Look into it before getting tattooed. I have heard that many inks also contain plastics. Yikes!

* Eyelash Extension glue contains formaldehyde and latex I got some and they looked great but made my eyes sting, so i investigated. I read of a nontoxic glue to take to the salon, but couldn’t find it online.

* Botox is called “Botox Neurotoxin” the name freaks me out. MCS is very much about chemicals that affect your brain called “neurotoxins”. I have read that people have become very ill with immune system issues and even MCS after using these products. Grow bangs~

*Dermal Fillers are said to be ‘natural Hyaluronic Acid’ but I have read that it is made from bacteria and is not so natural as they say. Also, it is not published what are the preservatives and chemicals in the mixture.

* Keratin Treatment is toxic I have read, investigate before you get it. I got one that was supposedly formaldehyde and chemical free, but it burned my eyes and throat. Those advertised as non-toxic were found to contain formaldehyde and other chemicals.

*Breast and other Implants Even if the silicone never leaked, plastics are chemicals whose effects are still not completely known. Heated plastic is not good. Most chemicals in plastics have never been tested and I would not want that in my body. Many people believe implants cause MCS and other immune system issues.

*Hair Extensions: some are more toxic than others. Smell before buying, I got really sick once with hair extensions. They are full of formaldehyde.

Here are some common toxic Personal Care Products and non-toxic alternatives to use instead.
Scent – use essential oils if tolerated or eliminate perfume
Fragrance Free Products – soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and bath products
Lotion – use unscented versions or natural oils such as jojoba, coconut, and olive oil
Shaving Cream – soap
Aftershave – witch hazel or hydrogen peroxide
Deodorant – peroxide, natural salt crystal, baking soda, unscented versions
Hair Styling – aloe vera gel, lemon juice
Hair Color – natural variations, peroxide to bleach, all natural henna for color
Shampoo / Conditioner unscented variations, baking soda, vinegar, citric acid, oils
Nail Polish and Remover – safer variations from the health food store or go au natural
Make-up – unscented, natural variations or go au natural

Skin Deep and EWG are a great data base of products. Check out make-up and products before buying.

see http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

Many products are making their products less toxic and other ‘healthy’ or ‘organic’ companies are being bought by large corporations and then made more cheaply and more toxic; so check your products once a year!
