The gym at the Ritz Carleton DC is where I first got sick with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. I have never been into a gym that did not have indoor air pollution!
I was an African dance fanatic and also there was an amazing cardio dance class called Yala. Both were quite intense cardio. One day I suddenly felt grouchy, the smells of everyone’s laundry detergent was overwhelming and sickening and my lungs felt bad.
PHOTO WHAT I USED TO LOOK LIKE WHEN I FIRST GOT SICK!! ~Oh well!! I gave that up! I still feel great and 🙂
Gyms are very toxic places. There is usually poor ventilation, they constantly clean the place and equipment with toxic cleaners and anti-bacterial chemicals. The real problem is that you are breathing deeply while working out and these chemicals go deep into your lungs. Also, when chemicals heat up they off gas. So when people are doing cardio suddenly their perfumes, body lotions, deodorants are off-gassing into the air. I loved dancing there more than anything in life. I tried to get air and perfume rules enforced, but I ended up getting banned from the gym for being such a bother!
Its a known fact that you body stores toxins in fat cells in order to protect your organs! That is why overweight people have more cancer and illness. Its not te fat, but all those toxins!
I kept trying to be normal and dance cardio in different places and then developed asthma. I stopped breathing one day while doing African dance. That was so scary! My lungs are good and I dont have asthma anymore. I did some dance in an inclosed room with poor air quality last winter, I did start to get asthma then, So that part of my life is over!
That’s when I started my online classes and took up belly dance which is really not cardio. I teach Zumba dance in my living room but at a lower level of cardio than I used to do.
If you do cardio in a gym you breathe in so fast & deeply. Its a closed in space with no ventilation. The constant use of cleaning chemicals & people whose laundry detergent & perfumes start off gassing once the body heats up, make it quite toxic. Carpets, PVC flooring, new paint, no windows all make a gym a toxic hazard.
If you do yoga in a studio you can buy pure rubber mat, Jade makes one. Take your own mat, otherwise its be wiped countless times of anti-bacteial chemicals which are endocrine disruptors and carcinogenic, and is made of toxic PVS and who knows what else. If you like the gym and dont get sick there, that’s probably ok to do yoga. Since I recovered I lift weights there. I just dont breathe too much and I wear plenty of clothes so I don’t rub that anti-bacterial chemicals into my skin. That is a very bad estrogen mimicker! I am aware that the air is not optimal, but I spend a little time there once a week and get out.

I could not be happier doing yoga/meditation/visualization at home! I belly dance at home and also in a studio. We are having incredible experiences and have made lasting friendships. Its mostly people with MCS or some other thing that keeps them home. The yoga/meditation has given me a strength and a health I have never experienced, even as a child. I feel great. I am convinced this is a brain retraining program that cures MCS.
I am available for private Belly Dance or Zumba/Cardio Belly classes $25 and want to start a group class! If you have a friend or 2 interested, email me at evespotofgold@gmail.com
