How It Started

Around 2010, I suddenly became extremely sensitive to people’s laundry detergent, shampoo, cleaning supplies, and other things. I researched it and quickly found out that I had Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

It came on right after I had a tragic death in my family and lost my faith. I had also had some Botox and whatnot. I had been working with aluminum foil sculpture for many years.

I sat and thought for so long: Why did I get this illness? I don’t know. I do think it was a combination of neurological sensitivity and toxin buildup.

I had lived in Mexico City. I used to sleep in my studio, which had solvents. I worked with paint with no gloves. I definitely had a toxin buildup, so my personal philosophy is that it was those two things put together.

Many people have developed chemical sensitivity after major stressful events, and my life fell apart. I had been a charismatic Christian, almost like a missionary, and that was my whole life, and I lost my faith. I was turning 45 and had no husband, no children, no nothing. So maybe it could have been the hormones too.

Everything together was a trifecta, and I became very sick.

What Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Was Like for Me

If you don’t know what environmental illness or environmental sensitivity syndrome is, it’s horrible. It manifests in different ways, but mine was mostly to do with neurotoxic fumes that you could smell.

But not always. There were other things that you couldn’t smell, but it was usually things in the air.

People are vastly different with this syndrome, but that’s the most common. People develop all kinds of horrible symptoms, sharp pains in the bladder, anaphylactic shock, or allergies to almost everything. It’s horrible.

People Don’t Believe I Had It Because I Got Well

People don’t believe I really had it because I got well, but I literally spent years studying, experimenting on myself, detoxing, breathing, grounding, and doing everything possible.

I will eventually put my old blog posts back up, but it’s going to take a while.

I’m Neurologically Sensitive

I’m not neurotypical. I have different kinds of what they call neuro-atypical situations, which I’m not going to go into detail about.

But now I understand that I am a highly sensitive person. I’m neurologically very sensitive. I can see so many colors. I have what seem like supernatural abilities, but also sensitivity and weakness.

People’s perfume doesn’t bother me anymore, but there are certain smells that are just nasty. But it’s not the same as being sick on a daily basis and reacting to every tiny little toxin.

Is There a Psychological Component?

In my reading, I found a lot. Some people did say it was psychological and that it didn’t actually exist.

So, being me, the perpetual scientific experiment, sometimes when I was having a reaction—which was pretty much every time I went anywhere—I experimented on myself.

I still tried to go to events and parties for a few years until I finally gave up. But I would have a toxic reaction sometimes while I was drunk.

You know, when you drink heavily, your senses are completely dulled. So I wondered if it was psychosomatic.

I also experimented with taking some clonazepam, which I had a prescription for, but I didn’t take it unless I urgently needed it.

So if I was having a reaction, I experimented with taking some of those pills or having a drink or two to see: Was it my hyperarousal, my neurosis, my OCD, or whatever?

Sometimes the drink or anti-anxiety medicine would stop the reaction.

But many times it would not.

Anxiety Could Increase My Reactions

So what I’ve come to understand in my particular case is that anxiety can definitely increase the severity or likelihood of a reaction to toxins.

I Recovered Fully

Long story short, and you can watch my old YouTube videos, and eventually I’ll put up my old blog posts, but I recovered fully from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

It took me a very long time.

I was still getting sicker and sicker for two years after I started detoxing and trying to heal.

Once I started getting better, I got better and better each year until maybe after 10 years, I could literally stand in the middle of the perfume section and smell the perfume.

Before, even from 10 feet away, I could only smell the toxin.

When Chanel Purfume Smells Like Raid

When you have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, smelling someone’s Chanel is like somebody spraying Raid in your face.

It’s horrible.

So what I’m saying is that I completely recovered.

PTSD From Toxins

Part of my healing was understanding that I had PTSD from toxins, so anytime I would detect a toxin, my brain would go into fight-or-flight and I would become very anxious.

This is normal if toxins have been making you sick for years. Your nose is out there like a watchdog at your front door trying to keep you safe.

So part of my healing, I understood, was learning how to relax when I smelled a previously reactive toxin.

That could be shampoo, fabric softener, some cleaning stuff, or even the stuff they spray in the air at my apartment building.

I don’t like those smells, and I try to take in as few toxins as possible, but my body knows how to process them now, so I’m OK.

I just have to tell myself, “I’m OK,” and breathe.

It took quite a bit of time to retrain my brain from reacting with anxiety.

Retraining My Fight-or-Flight Response

I’m neurologically sensitive, and of course my fight-or-flight response is going off a tiny bit when I’m smelling something I know is toxic, like the stuff they clean our apartment floor with.

I wanted to mention this because I’m such a self-aware person and such a creative thinker that I’m always going to try to find a way to heal.

That was really the last part of my healing because that kind of fear and trigger reaction is very unpleasant, and it made it so that I still didn’t want to go anywhere.

It took me a long time to know that I could go sit in a restaurant and be fine.

I still don’t really like it that much, and I prefer to be outside and I prefer clean air, but it’s not that I have a condition that keeps me from it.

How This Led Me to Teaching Exercise Online

I was the first online cardio dance teacher and yoga facilitator because I couldn’t go to the gym anymore.

To this day, I have ZoomGym, where we do abs, 20 minutes of yoga, and I teach belly dance every day.

Check it out. It’s free for three weeks. No subscription, no credit card, no nothing.

If you have chemical sensitivity, let me know how you’re doing and let me know what you think of this.

The OCD-Like Part of Chemical Sensitivity

It did turn into kind of an OCD-like obsessive-compulsive disorder because when I was sick, I literally had to know the toxins in everything I had.

Even when I would rinse my dishes with sink water, I would then rinse them with clean water—you know, spring water or reverse-osmosis water.

I have a friend, and she did the same thing. She’s very sensitive.

But it does turn into an OCD, and it is what it is.

Do you think that’s a bit of a component?

I can explain it this way: I don’t like boxes or stereotypes, but there are psychological components, and it’s like, which came first, the chicken or the egg?

It doesn’t really matter.~When toxins make you sick like that, you live in a very hostile environment, and you have to be aware of everything you’re coming into contact with 24/7.

Happy healing.

No soy neurotípica.

Me recuperé completamente

Me tomó mucho tiempo.

Realmente no importa.
